I decided to put my money where my mouth is and give photographic proof that people with greasy ass hair can go several days between shampoos too. I was watching Courtney Loves Dallas over the weekend and Courtney’s bff Tori made a comment that she hadn’t washed her hair in 9 DAYS! I was so jealous. She does have thicker, textured hair so I get it. You lucky bitches can get away with shit like that. As you can see from the pictures, I have thinner, baby fine hair. You blow on it and it tangles. I wash my bangs and 4 hours later they look greasy. That’s how my life rolls and I’m ok with that…I’ve never been shy of a challenge.
I didn’t start pushing my hair through washings until recently. I saw an interview with Connie Britton and Andy Cohen (yes I watch a shit ton of BRAVO) and he asked her what her secret to fabulous hair was. She said ‘I don’t wash it…maybe once a week.’ I was inspired. Again she has that coveted bitch hair (thick and some texture) but I was then on a mission. I’m not going to tooth fairy the fuck out of this…by day 4 I have a ton of product build up and there’s no choice but to get it up and out of my sight. I have found ways to make updos cute and dressy for work. Throw on a jeweled headband and it’s not hard to take.
The breakdown:
My Hair Type: fine, not thick, oily roots, color treated, dry and damaged ends
Day 1:
Wash your mane and wash it well. If you’re ballin on a budget, I’d suggest a drugstore shampoo. Now before everyone goes postal, I’m not a professional or an expert. I’ve just tried a shit ton of shit on my hair and I’ve come to learn what’s good, what sucks, what’s worth your money and what should be taken off the shelves. Salon grade product is always ideal and what you should go for but if you don’t want to spend the money, there are ways around it. If your ballin and feel budgets are for bitches, go for Moroccan Oil shampoo, conditioner and hair oil. If you’re not one of these products whores, go for a drugstore shampoo. If you have grease issues like me, only shampoo your roots. Right now I’m liking Herbal Essences Color Me Happy. It’s not SUPER moisturizing so it cuts grease and doesn’t contribute to oily scalp. When you get into the more moisturizing shampoos, you start getting into trouble with your french fry maker. My hair is dry so I spend my hair budget on conditioner. I use Moroccan Oil Moisturizing Conditioner and hair oil. It can be found at most salons. If you have a Beauty Brands or Beauty First location near you, they always have coupons you can use on it. If you have one and not the other, they take competitor coupons. Sometimes I will shower, shampoo, then get out of the shower and put in conditioner. I’ll put my damp hair saturated in conditioner on the top of my head and do some things around the house. Wash it out about 30 minutes later or hit it with the blow dryer for extra nourishment.
With the Moroccan Oil, I put on a nickel to dime size amount of PhD and blow dry on low heat. The less heat you put on your hair, the better off you’ll be. Then I curl my hair or create beachy waves with my flat iron. I use a skinny CROC with InfraRed. Since my hair is fine, I use as low heat as possible. I can still get a curl around 280 degrees. I strongly recommend flat irons with a heat control dial. They don’t have to be expensive. I am NOT shy with hairspray so I spray the ends and piece them apart with a finishing touch of Sexy Hair Seal and Spray.
I often feel my hair looks better on the second day. To achieve this look, I spray dry shampoo on my roots that frame my face…so bang area down to ear hairs. Then I spray my part and the crown. I rub my fingers into my scalp to help it dry and create volume. I’ve tried a lot of dry shampoos…a lot blow but I’ve always loved Kenra Platinum Dry Shampoo and I just picked up Salon Grafix Invisible Dry Shampoo that isn’t bad. Both can be found at Ulta. After the tease, I touch up my waves with the flat iron, hairspray then Seal and Spray
Day 3:
I’m still determined to wear at least half of my hair down so I wash my bangs down to the sides by my ears in the sink with shampoo only. Blow dry on low heat and spray dry shampoo to the crown. This really freshens up your hair. Again, touch up any waves and pull sides back with a bobby pin. If you need some height, tease the crown. I hid my bobby’s by doing a French Twist application to the back. I added a lace headband for some pizazz because I was feeling boring that day and needed a sparkle up my ass. I have a peanut head so headbands often look odd on me. This one looked weird so I pulled my half pony over it in the back.
Now this is where you’re going to want to walk the plank…BUT DON’T. Spray dry shampoo on your roots. At this point you might need to spray everywhere, not just the front. The dry shampoo will give you volume and make it easier to tease. Poofy hair doesn’t look old and it sure as shit doesn’t look tired. Perfect solution to hiding dirty hair. Tease the shit out of it and gather it in a pony at the top of your head and grab the hair in pieces to make a messy pile. Secure with a rubber band. Use bobby pins to secure certain pieces until you get what you’re looking for. Hair spray the shit out of it.
Day 5:
Day 5 could be the easiest day. You already have a shit ton of product in your hair so you don’t really need to add more unless some oil is showing through then hit it up with more dry shampoo and give it more umph with a tease if you’re falling flat. Go for the same messy bun you had yesterday but make it look different by adding a jeweled head band or head wrap depending on your plans for the day.
