I have been asked for my 2 cents on zits so here we go. Again, I’m not a professional so don’t bitch at me that it didn’t work for you. This is just what works for me and is worth a shot for you. If something works better for you or you have another tip, feel free to leave it in the comments.
Everyone knows the underground volcano zits are a pisser. The ones that get really red and hurt every time you blink are my personal fave. Or the ones that feel like they have a pulse.? We’ve all been there. No matter how old you are in life, everyone is prone to the breakout or pizza face conundrum. There are a few preventative measures you can take. Not only do these things work for me but they are listed as successful tips in just about every beauty article on the topic.
1. Change/wash your pillowcase once a week. Your facial grease is nasty, first of all and smells like bacon (at least mine does). Second of all, your dead skin cells get on your pillow when you sleep thus causing breakouts when you lay in it for a long period of time. Sexy right? Guarantee you’re going to go home and wash your shit tonight. Just the thought gives me hives. You know this is your problem if the majority of your constellations are happening on your temples or side of your face.
2. Don’t be a scrub and go to bed with make up on. Not only does it get everywhere while you’re sleeping but it’s terrible for your skin. Your pores need to breathe and if they are clogged with your multi-layer foundation, you’re suffocating them. If you’re a lazy drunk, like I am, get some facial cleansing wipes and keep them in your nightstand. You can wash your face while laying in bed hiccupping. *if you use these, make sure you also have a night cream in your nightstand to apply afterwards. I have dry skin and these wipes don’t provide a ton of moisture, they strictly clean. You should always be using a heavy cream at night anyway but if you don’t, just use your regular facial moisturizer.

3. If you ignored numbers 1 and 2 and now have a volcano on your face, don’t panic. If it’s a beat red underground situation, I wash with an exfoliating scrub and apply an acne serum to the culprit. I personally like Clinique’s line of skin care. It’s the only thing I use. I try a shit ton of shit but they are the only ones with staying power in my collection. The serum is from their Acne Solutions line and it’s called Spot Healing Gel. My entire family uses it, even my dad. It’s pricier than something you’d get at Walgreens but I’m not kidding, one bottle will last you a year plus. You can use it in the morning and at night, no scent, reduces redness and irritation and to be frank…it dries that fucker out IN A DAY! Since it does dry it out, you need to apply some moisturizer after it dries. Once it gets to the really dry/flaky stage, I put a dab of Bio-Oil on it overnight and the next morning it’s gone. I will do a separate blog on Bio-Oil because that king of the castle deserves it’s own page.
4. It’s also great to use a toner. If you’ve never used one, pick up one from the drugstore. Trust me, you’ll be amazed. Get a cheapy one to start if you’re on the fence. Wash your face how you normally do, put the toner on a cotton ball and wipe your face getting every crevice. Now look at the cotton ball. I bet you thought you did a great job cleaning your face before…NOT. It will be brown, I promise. Toner is a stronger cleaner that digs deeper to rid your skin of impurities, flaky skin, shrinks pores etc. They aren’t meant to dry out your skin, just give you a deeper clean. If you’re having a breakout, start with a good scrub and toner. Clinique has a few toners that I love. If you go during bonus time, they usually have a free one in the gift bag. If you use tan in a can or bronzer, the toner will strip it off, just a heads up. If you’re having a breakout, you probably should lay off the sunless tanner until it clears anyway.
5. Careful on the makeup. I know instinct is to apply layer upon layer of foundation to cover it but I honestly think it not only makes it look worse but it’s just making your skin worse underneath. Your make up could also be the cause of your crater face. If you use a brush or sponge to apply, clean it with special brush cleaner or get a new sponge. Your facial grease and flaky skin, harbor in there and you start redistributing it to your face when you apply. It’s also helpful to look for powder and foundation that promote healthy skin and work to clear up acne while you wear it. Again, all of Clinique’s powders and foundations do this as I’m sure many others do as well.
6. My last tip to clearing your pizza face is to LEAVE IT ALONE. Once you’ve done your routine, stop touching your face and stop picking at it. Do your routine of scrub (not hard, your shit’s not sandpaper), toner, serum to the trouble area only and moisturizer. Do this in the morning and right before bed.
